Activated carbon adsorption

Leachate treatment on landfill sites imposes high demands on the process technology involved. The reason is the complex composition of wastewater which in many cases contains not only large amounts of biodegradable substances but also a high number of organic/inorganic substances that can hardly be degraded by means of biological processes. The modification of an existing biological treatment plant therefore usually requires the installation of an additional chemical-physical treatment stage (adsorption of activated carbon).

Activated carbon has long been used in environmental protection worldwide. It offers high adsorption capacity for a range of various substances due to the large number of pores and the associated large surface area. For technical and economical reasons, TDL Energie GmbH uses granulated activated carbon (GAC) with a particle size of 0.2 to 5 mm for the treatment of landfill leachate. The activated carbon is stored in fixed-bed containers which provide sufficient contact time due to their size and thus enable the high loading of the pores in carbon material.

Proven practices have shown that 2 - 3 adsorption filters should be operated in series. The sequence of the individual adsorber units can be adjusted accordingly by valve switching. This is referred to as a rolling circuit which increases the lifetime of the activated carbon and reduces operating costs.

TDL Energie GmbH offers the following products and services:

  • Delivery of mobile and permanently installed adsorbers
  • On-site installation
  • Commissioning and maintenance
  • Customer support via remote control and telephone
  • Maintenance and service
  • Supply of spare parts and wear parts
  • Assistance with exchanging granulated activated carbon (GAC)
  • Concepts for operators / Rental concepts
  • Adaption and modification of existing technologies possible

In combination with an MBR system, granulated activated carbon can be used for treating the filtered outflow resulting from the membrane biology process, or for treating the concentrate after membrane filtration, for example reverse osmosis. The activated carbon adsorption process is a cost-effective method that is suitable for the treatment of less polluted waters such as groundwater or drinking water.

Activated carbon adsorbers by TDL Energie GmbH are used to sustainably remove non-biodegradable substances such as PFAS or trace substances (pesticides, pharmaceutical products, X-ray contrast agents) from the water. TDL Energie GmbH offers both, mobile plants to rent and containerised plants for the permanent installation on site.
